Your Mouth, Gums, and Teeth

Good dental habits don’t come easily. It takes discipline to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. But like all habits, you only have to force yourself to do these tasks for a short while – maybe a few weeks. After that, the tasks become habit. After the habit takes over, if you don’t brush and floss your teeth, you feel weird. But before you can make brushing and flossing a habit, you have to know the right way to do it.

Brushing
First of all, what kind of a toothbrush should you use? Most dentists recommend a brush with soft bristles because they’re gentler on gums. Choose a head size that makes it effortless for you to reach all parts of your mouth – some dentists advise adults to use child’s size toothbrushes for this reason. Keep your brush clean, don’t lend it to anyone, and replace it every few months. For the best brushing results and less wear and tear on your gum line, dentists recommend placing your toothbrush at a forty-five-degree angle on your gums and brushing up from your lower teeth and down from your upper teeth. Be sure to brush in the same direction on all outer and inner surfaces of your teeth. On the chewing surfaces and behind your teeth, use a back-and-forth motion. When you feel like you’re ready to stop brushing, brush a few seconds more.

Flossing
Flossing is substancial for removing trapped food and plaque, which is a soft, sticky bacteria that builds up on teeth and can cause gum disease. If not removed for a couple of days, such as when you don’t floss and brush, plaque will harden into a cement-like substance called tartar. It may be a little trickier to obtain the hang of flossing, yet with practice you will. Holding the floss taut between your thumb and forefinger ( with about one inch between the fingers), guide it gently down between teeth. Try not to snap it too quickly down onto gums. Curve the floss into a C shape around the sides of each tooth. Then use an up-and-down motion -not a sawing motion – to obtain at plaque between teeth and just below your gum like. Advance to clean floss as you work around your mouth by winding the used portion around your fingers.

Avoiding Cavities
